Eyelid Surgery

An eyelid lift can be combined with any facelift procedure to treat drooping eyelids. Sagging lids can obscure your vision and contribute to a chronically fatigued expression. Since the facelift does not address issues in the upper third of the face, problems with the upper or lower eyelids can impact the quality of your facelift results.

Browlift

Heavy, drooping brows can cause forehead and brow wrinkles that create a chronically angry expression. Combining a brow lift with your facelift will restore a smoother forehead with a brighter, more youthful eye appearance. -

Custom Combination

Aspects of all four facial procedures can be performed to provide you with the facial appearance you desire. Dr. Ip will customize your facial treatment process to target your specific areas of issue. A unique, customized treatment plan helps ensure natural, flawless results.

Other Procedures Often Done With Facelift Surgery

Traditional Facelift

Facelift surgery addresses fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin on the middle and lower regions of the face by tightening the underlying facial muscles and removing excess skin. The redistribution or removal of fat with liposuction may be included if necessary.

Benefits:

  • Eliminates fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lessens the appearance of jowls
  • Returns youthful contours
  • Provides the most significant improvement

Incisions:

  • Incisions begin in the hairline by the temples and continue around the ear to the lower scalp.

Limited Incision Facelift

The limited incision facelift offers facial rejuvenation with less downtime and scarring. This technique is ideal for patients experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity on the middle and lower face.

Benefits:

  • Less invasive
  • Fewer incisions
  • Improvement of fine lines and wrinkles

Incisions:

  • Shorter incisions run along the hairline and occasionally within the lower eyelid.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is commonly performed in conjunction with a traditional facelift and addresses skin laxity and vertical banding of the neck by removing excess skin and fatty deposits. The combination of a facelift and neck lift helps maintain balance and harmony between your features.

Benefits:

  • More youthful neck contours
  • Elimination of wrinkles and neck bands
  • Improves the appearance of a double chin
  • Reduces jowls

Incisions:

  • Incisions wrap behind each earlobe and end in the lower scalp.

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

Reverse Signs of Aging

Wrinkles and sagging can rapidly age your appearance. Most men and women desire firm and smooth facial contours. What many patients fail to realize is that most facial aging is caused by laxity of the muscular structures of the face. Addressing these deeper layers of tissue will provide a more dramatic, longer-lasting reversal of visible aging, providing you with the facial appearance you desire.

Eliminate Jowls and Double Chin

Sagging skin that accumulates around the jawline can create the appearance of unsightly jowls or a prominent double chin. An undefined facial contour can contribute to an appearance that is heavier-set than you actually are. Trimming away excess skin from along the jawline will enhance the definition of lower face for a leaner facial contour.

Slim Neck Profile

Patient with excess skin and weak neck muscles will find that their poor neck profile also ages their appearance. In some patients, treating facial issues without addressing the neck will result in an unfinished or noticeably altered look. Providing a slimmer neck profile for older patients is important for creating an overall attractive facial profile.

 T. Y. Steven Ip, MD performs most of his facelift surgeries at the Fashion Island Surgery in Newport Beach, California, Bedford Surgical Center in Beverly Hills, California, and Park Avenue Surgery Center in Manhattan, NYC. The surgery centers are fully accredited and certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc., and Medicare.

What Surgeries Are Performed in Combination?

Facelift can be performed alone or in addition to other plastic surgeries, such as:

  • Browlift
  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Lip Lift
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Liposuction

Scheduling Your Consultation

The first step in the facelift process is scheduling a consultation. Your consultation is essential before your plastic surgery. During your consultation will give you a chance to meet with Dr. Ip. He will review your medical history and perform a physical exam. He will address your desired results  and explain the surgical procedure.  You will have a chance to ask any questions you want concerning facelift. Keep in mind that before scheduling a consultation, you should prepare so you can make the most of your appointment.

Determine if you are a good candidate for facelift by asking yourself these questions.

  • Are you in good overall health?
  • Do you have a realistic expectation for the outcome of your procedure?
  • Are you ready emotionally to make an essential decision regarding altering your appearance?
  • Can you fit the cost of a facelift procedure into your budget?

Scheduling Your Pre-Op Appointment and Surgery

After your consultation, you can choose a date for your surgery. About one week before your surgery date, you will come in for a pre-op appointment. During that visit, Dr. Ip will explain the surgical game plan. His office will provide you with prescription for medications needed for after the surgery. Pre-Op photos will be taken. Blood work will be drawn. Post-Op Instructions will be provided. You will pay for the surgical, anesthesia, and OR fees at this time.

On the Day Of Surgery

You will arrive at the surgery center one hour prior to your surgery time. The pre-op nurses at the surgery center will get you ready. The OR team (nurse and anesthesiologist) greet you in the pre-op area. Dr. Ip will also come to meet with you and make his pre-op markings.  You will be transferred to the operating room. A facelift surgery takes about 3-4 hours. After the surgery, you will be transferred to the recovery room. Most patients will spend the night at the surgical center and be discharged in the morning. Some patients will prefer to go to an aftercare facility.

Postoperative Visit

All dressings are removed and a chin strap compression band is placed. This band is used to prevent extreme turning of your head in the immediate post-operative period.  If there was a drain placed during surgery, it may be removed if the volume of the drainage is low and consistency of the fluid is serous. Your post-op visits will be the next day, 7th day, 14th day, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and at one year.

How Do I Prepare For My Facelift Surgery?

Patients preparing for a facelift should quit smoking six weeks prior to their surgery. You shouldn’t take any blood-thinning medications for two weeks prior to your procedure. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of nutrients. Do not eat after midnight the day of your surgery.

What Can I Do to Help Minimize Scarring After Surgery?

To decrease scarring Dr. Ip recommends that patients:

  • Avoid sun exposure on the incisions for up to 6 months.
  • Keep the incisions clean in the early recovery period.
  • Scar fading gels or silicone tape for 6 weeks to 6 months.
  • Avoid stretching or turning the head aggressively for 6-8 weeks to prevent tension on the incision while it is healing.

How Long Is A Facelift Procedure?

Facelift surgery is an outpatient procedure and takes two to four hours to perform.

What Results Can I Expected From My Facelift?

Treated areas will be visibly tighter and look more youthful following your procedure. Your final results won’t be visible until swelling has fully subsided, which may take several weeks. Most patients achieve results that erase five to 15 years from their appearance. Careful maintenance of your skin will ensure the longevity of your results.

Signs of facial aging can express themselves as fine lines, wrinkles, or deep creases. These coupled with sagging skin along the face and neck require surgical intervention to restore a smooth, youthful complexion. Facelift surgery utilizes various techniques to address the causes of visible aging in the lower portion of the face. Dr. Ip will guide you through the decision-making process so that you can achieve the look you love.

NEUROTOXINS

  • A facial injection designed to treat wrinkles in the upper third of the face
  • Targets crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and furrows between the brows
  • Results last between six and nine months

DERMAL FILLERS

  • Facial injections that improve the appearance of wrinkles in the lower two-thirds of the face
  • Provides significant improvement to wrinkles around the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and creases under the eyes
  • Results last anywhere from six months to a year depending on the formula used

LASER SKIN RESURFACING

  • Laser skin resurfacing uses laser energy to heat deep in the dermis
  • The heating process destroys specific areas of damaged cells, stimulating new collagen production
  • The stimulation of collagen smooths wrinkles and improves pigmentation all over the face
  • Some patients can benefit from non-surgical facial enhancement. Patients with relatively good skin elasticity might only need a non-invasive treatment to achieve the aesthetic they desire. Many patients choose to undergo routine non-surgical procedures following their facelift to maintain the quality of their results and minimize future aging.

Non-Surgical Enhancements

Diet

Diet is an important factor in your healing process. It is necessary that you provide your body with the essential vitamins and nutrients it needs to heal following your surgery. Your diet should consist of protein, healthy fats, vegetables, and fruits. However, a diet of soft foods may be best immediately following your surgery because of the side effects of the general anesthesia. A detailed list of healthy, nutrient-packed foods will be provided for you before your surgery.

Activity

Patients will be required to limit their physical activities following their procedure. You will need to rest for several days after surgery. Most patients return to work two weeks after their procedure. You can resume your regular exercise routine sometime between four and six weeks post-surgery. You shouldn’t smoke for at least six weeks following your procedure.

Medications

You will be prescribed medications to take on a routine basis following your surgery. Antibiotics will be prescribed to prevent infection. Muscle relaxers used to reduce discomfort. Pain medication may also be used to relieve any additional discomfort you may feel during your recovery.
